Ao dar de cara com a listagem de indicados à versão 2003 dos Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, maior premiação da indústria dos quadrinhos americanos, você pode tomar um susto. Isso porque tivemos uma profusão de pequenas e médias editoras independentes se destacando em diversas categorias, o que reflete uma excelente mudança de pensamento no mercadão americano. Os juízes que selecionaram os indicados deste ano foram Andrew D. Arnold (Time.com), o jornalista Jen Contino (do site comicon.com), o agente Steve Leaf (da distribuidora Diamond Comics), o revendedor Jeremy Shorr (Titan Comics, Dallas) e o artista (e vencedor do Eisner Award) Charles Vess.
Um detalhe interessante é que, pela primeira vez, um quadrinho publicado na internet foi indicado a um dos prêmios: Nowhere Girl, de Justine Shaw, foi indicado a melhor série nova. Dá pra ler o gibi virtual em www.nowheregirl.com.
A DC Comics é a campeã de indicações, com 23 (incluindo 4 indicações parciais). Só a série Fables levou quatro indicações, ao lado de Gotham Central. A Fantagraphics vem logo atrás, com 18 indicações. Já a nossa conhecida Marvel Comics levou 7 indicações (e 3 indicações parciais). O Demolidor de Brian Bendis e Alex Maleev aparece em quatro categorias, enquanto o Incrível Hulk de Bruce Jones dá as caras em outras três.
As cédulas de votação serão enviadas agora em maio para mais de 4.000 criadores, revendedores e editores de quadrinhos. Os resultados serão anunciados em uma cerimônia de gala na Comic-Con Internacional de San Diego na noite de 18 de julho, no salão de cerimônias do San Diego Convention Center.
